Danny Mejia, best known by his fans as Danny D, Xtreme. Has one the the most distinctive voices in all of Urban Bachata. And is one of the pioneers of the genre. With a sound and style that has not only set apart in originality and uniqueness. But also endeared him to fans the world over. Fusing music that originated in the Dominican Republic with the urban sounds of New York.
Born to Domincan parents, Danny was born on July 23, 1985 in the Bronx, New York. As a child he was very close to his mother. Who raised him as a single mother. And also encouraged her son and served as motivation to apply himself and develop his talents. Danny began his interest in music at the local church that they both attended. Around the age of 12, Danny to sing at the church. But because he was shy, he kept a low profile. But with the insistence of his mother who began to look for ways to help him come out of his shell. Danny recalls, "When I was too shy to sing in front of people. She'd offer me money to sing for them." When Danny was 14, he had an accident which left him with a broken leg. This marked a turning point for him and the way he approached and appreciated music. No longer able to play drums or go outside to play with his friends. He began to fool around with a piano that his mother had around. And as time went on, Danny started drawing melodies out of it. The better he got, the more it intensified his passion for music. To the point that when he was able to return to school, unbeknownst to his mother. He began to cut class so he could dedicate more time to working on music, songs and lyrics. Little by little Danny began putting his shyness to the side. Especially when he noticed to attention he got from girls. And the affect that he had on them when he sang to them. He participated in local talent shows. And before long he decided to make music his career. For along as he could remember, he was influenced by all the music he heard in church and the music he was exposed to on the streets. Aswell as on tv. Developing a strong taste for American artists like R. Kelly, 112 and Mariah Carey. To name just a few. But BACHATA was what captivated his interest the most.
With its romantic lyrics and its sensual way of dancing. While defining his style, he also began to write his own lyrics and compose his own songs. All the while working on perfecting the songs and the way he would sing them. In 2001 he met the man who would become his first manager. And the man he set him in the right direction to becoming the artist that he dreamed of being. He then created the Urban Bachata duo Xtreme. In 2002 he released his first cd XTREME We Got Next. Which featured the bachata anthem "Te Extrano" and other standout tracks. The following album saw a change in the duo. With the departure and replacement of his fellow singer. Bringing in local talent Steve Styles to share vocal duties. They released the self titled album Xtreme. Then came the critically acclaimed Haciendo Historia. Which achieved certified Platinum status in sales. And gave the duo a platform to conquer new hearts and grow their fanbase worldwide. The follow up to that was Chapter Dos and On The Verge (a reissue of Chapter Dos and exclusive songs from their Mun2 reality show.)
From the very beginning, his charisma, his charm and his voice have been distinctive in everything that he has done. All helping him become one of the most popular and stand out artist of the genre. In 2009, Mun2 made history with the addition to their programming of On The Verge. A show based on the daily adventures of Xtreme. Which became and instant hit. Garnering them to biggest debut for a show on the Mun2 channel. 2011-2012 saw Danny go on an extensive world tour. Which saw him grace stages in Australia, Chile, Argentina, Italy, France, Spain, Switzerland, Holland, Germany, Canada, Puerto Rico and all across the United States. Between 2012-2013 Danny D embarked on another extensive world tour. This time performing in the Czech Republic, Poland, London, Spain (on 4 different occassions,) and Italy. Aswell as all over the United States. Now as Danny D prepares to release his first album as a solo artist. He has begun a new chapter in his career and that of the bachata genre. The best has yet to be written.
