David Hodo
David Hodo, Village People’s one and only original “Construction Worker,” was born and raised in California. He graduated from Sacramento State College with a B.A. in speech. “I’ll always be a California boy, but I’m also a New Yorker at heart having lived half my life there,” explains Hodo. When he had moved to New York, David got his Actors’ Equity card during only his second day in the city; a feat of which was unheard of! With this, he made his living singing and dancing on Broadway and in countless Summer Stock tours…too many to mention! He was featured on Broadway and Off-Broadway in PAL JOEY, DOCTOR JAZZ, the rock musical SALVATION, and in Sal Mineo’s drama FORTUNE AND MEN’S EYES.
The oddest job of which David has worked…other than Village People…was that of a roller-skating fire-eater on WHAT’S MY LINE?, which lasted until he earned his nickname of “Scar” by nearly burning his face off!
The year that David joined Village People was also when his birthday fell on 7-7-77, which he knew from childhood would be a significant year. Touring the world with Village People, he has the opportunity of meeting numerous wonderful people and having the time of his life. Aside from covering the globe several times over, some of David’s most memorable moments were winning an American Music Award, being kissed by Ella Fitzgerald, shaking hands with Ladybird Johnson (“an incredibly powerful presence”), and meeting many of his childhood idols including Dick Clark, The Righteous Brothers, Leslie Gore, Lou Christie, Little Anthony and The Imperials, and especially Ike and Tina Turner. “I was totally blown away by her , so when I had the opportunity to work with her on tour in Germany several years ago, I had to refrain from falling at her feet and vowing complete and total servitude to THE GODDESS of goddesses and the undisputed ‘Queen of Rock & Roll,’” exclaims David!
David is a talented composer, having written original material for Village People, which has been performed during their live show. Music is David’s soul food, though he is also a voracious reader who’s biggest fear is to be stuck somewhere without anything to read! His weaknesses include sunglasses, bookstores, and stray animals (he’s the one who you see walking around the city at night with bags of dry dog and cat food!). David is an animal freak. He has two cats of his own of which he rescued from the streets of his neighborhood. David claims that if he weren’t on tour so much he would have a menagerie!
David is a member of the board of directors of Sixuvus Ltd., the Village People’s corporation. “Hanging out with the Village People is a great pleasure of mine. I enjoy their company. We have been through hell and high water together, and we can still make the best out of the worst situations,” explains Hodo. With the Village People, David continuously performs to standing room only audiences chock-full of “Construction Worker” wanna-bees, and has made recent guest appearances on the high-rated ABC special DISCO BALL, FAMILY FEUD, and on America’s favorite family show, THE OSBOURNES (performing at Sharon and Ozzy’s New Years Eve nuptials). With his masculine “Construction Worker” presence, David Hodo remains a “macho man!”
